In recent years, there have been shifts from traditional to contemporary approaches in content area education and language education with all students, particularly multilingual learners. By harnessing the emerging consensus across content area education and language education, the education system has made progress in creating more equity-centered educational opportunities for multilingual learners in content areas. With pressing societal challenges (e.g., COVID-19, climate change) further exposing injustices disproportionately impacting minoritized student groups, the education system should advance more justice-centered education with all students, including multilingual learners. Using examples from science education as a content area, the presentation will trace shifts from traditional to contemporary to potential future approaches to integrating STEM and language with multilingual learners across research, policy, and practice.
