CCWT | Internships and Vocational Skills Training in China
December 4, 2019, 9:30 am
Room 159, Wisconsin Idea Room, Education Building, 1000 Bascom Mall, UW-Madison
Jenny Chan
Assistant Professor of Sociology, Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Jenny Chan will discuss a project focused on understanding the internship experiences of Chinese teenage students. Under the existing system, a six-month, workplace-based internship is mandatory for three-year vocational education programs. The legal status of interns remains that of students, not employees, making the educational and labor rights of interns worthy of study.
In addition to her position as an assistant professor of sociology at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Jenny Chan is a recipient of Early Career Scheme funding awarded by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong. She is a co-author of the book, "Dying for an iPhone; Apple, Foxconn and the Lives of China's Workers."
This lecture is part of the Center for Research on College-to-Workforce Transitions (CCWT) Fall 2019 Seminar Series, co-sponsored by the UW-Madison Center for East Asian Studies in the Institute for Regional and International Studies and sponsored by the Wisconsin Center for Education Research.
